How Do Inflammation and Tissue Repair Affect Modality Choice?

Healing stages overlap; tissue capacity, symptoms and precautions matter more than memorized dates.

At a glance

INFLAMMATION

Protection and signaling

PROLIFERATION

New matrix and capillaries

REMODELING

Adaptation and graded capacity

What matters most

  • Inflammation coordinates early vascular and immune responses; pain and swelling alone do not describe the entire tissue state.
  • Proliferation produces new tissue and matrix that may not tolerate high loads; remodeling adapts tissue over a longer period.
  • Skin integrity, surgical instructions, infection or bleeding risk, and the functional task should all influence exercise and adjunct selection.

Safety and limits

Do not use heat or tissue-stressing interventions to bypass evaluation of unexplained acute swelling, bleeding, infection, impaired circulation or unstable repair.

Think it through

Scenario: A tendon repair hurts less at week three. Does that prove its load capacity has returned?

Reveal the reasoning

No. Pain reduction and remodeling timelines do not directly measure structural readiness. Follow the specific surgical or tissue-healing plan and progress appropriately.
