What Do UVA, UVB and UVC Mean in Therapy?

Learn the radiation categories and risks without using historical teaching doses as modern instructions.

At a glance

UVA

Longer-wave ultraviolet

UVB

Greater erythema-associated effects

UVC

Germicidal applications; exposure hazard

What matters most

  • UVA, UVB and UVC describe ultraviolet wavelength bands with different penetration and biological effects.
  • Older PT lectures discuss ultraviolet exposure for selected skin and wound conditions; modern indications are narrow and specialized.
  • Exposure response depends on skin sensitivity, medications, distance, dose and device design.

Safety and evidence limits

UV can injure eyes and skin and create long-term risk. Phototoxic medications and photosensitivity matter; these notes do not teach home use or dose calculation.

Try a clinical decision

Scenario: A patient asks whether a consumer UV lamp is a substitute for a clinician’s skin treatment. How should you answer?

Reveal the reasoning

No equivalence can be assumed. Discuss risks and the need for diagnosis and specialist-directed, device-specific care.

From my class notes: 20 UV Therapy.pdf. Current clinical context is distinguished from historical course teaching; not a procedural, dosing, or credentialing guide.
