Niche markets and service differentiation

15 Niche markets and service differentiation Why might a small specialty clinic outperform a broad general practice?

Core ideas from class

  • A niche is a defined patient or referral segment within a larger PT market; examples might be sports rehabilitation, balance, pelvic health or workplace prevention.
  • Specificity can improve program design, patient understanding and outreach, but may limit referral volume or increase dependence on a small market.
  • Test demand, clinician competence, access, reimbursement and competing providers before launching.

Think like a PT

You consider a falls-prevention service. Estimate who refers, how patients reach the service, what assessments you will use, and how you would measure success.

Remember

A niche is only sustainable when clinical value and a reachable population align.
