What differential diagnosis means in PT

What is the purpose of differential screening in PT? Separate a movement-based plan from findings that warrant medical collaboration or emergency care.

Key screening concepts

  • Screen for a presentation inconsistent with a straightforward movement disorder; distinguish a PT-manageable pattern from one needing medical assessment.
  • The lecture model combines interview, review of systems, medical history, examination, medical testing and referral/reassessment.
  • Use function and participation context (ICF) alongside body structure and impairment.

Three possible dispositions

Manage within PT: the presentation is appropriate for the plan. Coordinate care: additional medical assessment is indicated. Escalate immediately: an emergency pattern requires the local emergency response pathway.

Conceptual study framework only—not a stand-alone diagnostic algorithm.

PT clinical connection

This is an educational screening process, not an invitation to diagnose systemic disease from symptoms alone.

High-yield distinction

The goal is disposition, not a guessed diagnosis: Ask whether there is a PT-manageable problem, a need for collaborative medical review, or a time-critical emergency.
