FROM MY PT SCHOOL NOTES · MODALITIES · UNIT 3 · CHAPTER 11
What Is Photobiomodulation and Laser Therapy?
Understand light-related terms before interpreting marketing or deciding whether a treatment fits a clinical goal.
At a glance
POWER
W · rate of energy transfer
ENERGY
J · total energy
EXPOSURE
J/cm² · energy over area
What matters most
- Laser light differs from ordinary light by spectral and directional properties. Devices vary substantially in wavelength, output and delivery.
- Power (watts), energy (joules), irradiance (W/cm²) and radiant exposure (J/cm²) are not interchangeable.
- A proposed biological mechanism does not demonstrate meaningful benefit for a specific diagnosis; clinical effects need condition- and outcome-specific evidence.
Safety and evidence limits
Eye protection depends on the exact laser device and classification. Follow manufacturer warnings and current contraindications; do not borrow arbitrary historical dosages.
Safety reference: SAFE PAMP consensus (2024) addresses trained-clinician safety considerations for selected physical agents. It does not certify every device or indication as universally safe.
Try a clinical decision
Scenario: A device brochure says low-level laser ‘regenerates tissue.’ What must be clarified before relying on this claim?
Reveal the reasoning
Ask which population, protocol and patient-relevant outcomes were studied. Consider safety, alternatives and functional goals; mechanism alone is not efficacy.
From my class notes: 17 Laser.pdf. Current clinical context is distinguished from historical course teaching; not a procedural, dosing, or credentialing guide.
