How Does Diathermy Differ from a Hot Pack?

Electromagnetic energy has different tissue interactions and precautions from superficial conductive heat.

SAFETY

Device and site screening

What matters most

  • Shortwave diathermy uses electromagnetic fields; electric-field and magnetic-field arrangements distribute energy differently.
  • Continuous and pulsed modes differ in how energy is delivered and their average thermal effects; pulsed output does not promise ‘nonthermal’ benefit.
  • The commonly taught 27.12 MHz shortwave example is a historical equipment concept, not a patient prescription.

Safety and evidence limits

Check electronic implants, metal or conductive materials, tissue status, reproductive/pregnancy-related considerations, sensation and exact device guidance. Contraindications are modality- and site-specific.

Try a clinical decision

Scenario: A person tolerated a hot pack last week. Does that prove shortwave diathermy would be safe?

Reveal the reasoning

No. The energy delivery and equipment hazards differ. Review the specific device, anatomy and patient factors before considering the modality.

From my class notes: 18 Diathermy.pdf. Current clinical context is distinguished from historical course teaching; not a procedural, dosing, or credentialing guide.
