FROM MY PT SCHOOL NOTES · NUTRITION · UNIT 3 · CHAPTER 10
Weight Management and Behavior Change
The lecture reviews appetite signals, energy balance, physical activity, behavioral patterns, weight-change approaches, and fad-diet claims.
What matters most
- Body weight is regulated by more than willpower. Appetite, behavior, medications, sleep, environment, access, underlying health, and biological adaptations all affect long-term changes.
- Leptin and ghrelin. The course introduces leptin and ghrelin as signals relevant to appetite and energy regulation; real-world weight regulation is more complex.
- Exercise adds value beyond the scale. Movement can improve capacity, mood, strength, and cardiometabolic function even when weight change is modest.
The PT connection
Use respectful, person-centered language. Discuss functional goals, strength, sustainable activity, and the patient’s preferences. Refer for individualized weight and nutrition counseling instead of assigning calorie limits.
Current-practice perspective
Slides naming older weight-loss drugs and fashionable diets are historical; current pharmacologic and surgical options differ. Do not use this source as a current treatment catalog.
