Metabolism, ATP, and Energy Balance

Metabolism links nutrient intake with energy transfer, synthesis of body tissue, storage, and physiologic work.

What matters most

  • Anabolism and catabolism. Anabolic processes build larger compounds; catabolic pathways break down substrates and release usable energy.
  • ATP. Adenosine triphosphate is a common energy-transfer molecule; chemical energy from nutrients supports muscle contraction and other cellular work.
  • Organ roles. Liver handles nutrient processing and storage; pancreas helps regulate glucose via hormones; kidneys maintain fluid and waste balance.

The PT connection

When returning someone to activity, match exercise progression to healing, fatigue, sleep, access to food, and sufficient energy availability—without calculating a personalized diet from a rough calorie formula.

Current-practice perspective

Some historical slides describe fasting and weight regulation too simply. They are core physiology examples, not a recommendation to fast or restrict intake.
