TMJ and additional imaging topics

Review the relevant anatomy and imaging question before deciding what the finding may mean for rehabilitation.

Key imaging concepts

  • TMJ assessment requires correlating mandibular mechanics and function with anatomy; imaging has limitations in uncomplicated mechanical symptoms.
  • Specialized views, CT and MRI serve different questions concerning osseous versus disc/soft-tissue features.
  • Imaging follow-up should always be integrated with a clinical exam and relevant specialist input.

PT clinical connection

When imaging does not answer a meaningful clinical question, it may not improve care.

High-yield distinction

Not every jaw symptom needs imaging: TMJ imaging should follow clinical question and specialist pathway rather than serve as a routine first step.
