Endocrine and metabolic disorders

How do endocrine and metabolic conditions change a PT encounter? Consider fatigue, glucose-related risk, sensation and unusual exercise responses.

Key screening concepts

  • Diabetes, thyroid disease and metabolic/bone disorders can modify fatigue, sensation, strength, wound healing and exercise response.
  • Consider hypoglycemia risk during activity, particularly in people using glucose-lowering therapies that can cause lows; monitor symptoms and follow the patient care plan.
  • Clinical suspicion leads to appropriate medical follow-up rather than PT ordering a broad lab panel without indication.

PT clinical connection

Unexplained acute mental-status changes, severe metabolic symptoms or concerning vital signs need urgent medical care.

High-yield distinction

Consider systemic modifiers: Unexplained fatigue, glucose instability or altered sensation may change exercise and referral plans.
